I have received my transplant
05/15/10 at 3:56pm

I got the call on APril 7th at 1:07 am and have been doing fine.  I have had a few stomach issues with the meds but over all doing well. I spend a little over 3 weeks in the hospital and go for a bronch on Thursday to check for rejection. Just wanted to let everyone know, I was on the list for 3.5 years and it was well worth the wait and I would do it all again in a minute!

Congratulations!!!!   I'm so happy to read that you received your transplant.  Even with just a little over a month with your "Second Wind" I can tell how happy you are.

Sometimes it takes a few months to get used to all of the new medications, but your body will adjust to them.  I think it took me about six months to get my Prograf adjusted, but I knew the first time I walked down the hall of the hospital, even with all of the chest tubes and pushing that wonderful IV pole that it was really worth it.  There was no oxygen tube behind me or pulling on my face.

Congratulations again and if there is anything that we here at Second Wind can do to help you or answer questions, please do not hesitate to email any of the Board Members, or call our help-line.

Healthy Regards,

So happy for you. It will take awhile on the meds. I started on Cyclosporine and it took  a couple of months to get it to stay at the level they wanted.  I had to drink Sporanox for about 6 months and that was terrible but necessary.  I laid low for the first 3 months to be sure I did not catch an infection or get sick. Yet still managed to get the flu which delayed my starting Pulmonary Rehab.  The good part....you can breath!

HOw old are you people that have had the transplants? I'm 65 and on the list at Duke Univ. Hospital. HOw did you raise the money needed?

Dear Sandy,

I was 56 years old when I received my bilateral lung transplant at Cleveland Clinic.  I am 61 now.  It's been 5 years and almost six months.  You asked about how I raised the money needed.  I was very fortunate to have good health insurance.  My health insurance covered most of the bills except my deductible.   While I was on the waiting list, I was still working so I saved as much money as possible to cover travel expenses and hotels.  I think my insurance has a provision for lodging and travel, but I didn't file a claim for it.  I got a really good rate at a suite hotel in Cleveland for my family while I was in the hospital and after I was released I stayed in the hotel for a couple of weeks. After that, I stayed with an aunt who was less than an hour away from the hospital.  I was in the hospital for 31 days, so I only needed to stay in Cleveland for a couple of weeks, then at my Aunt's home for another 4 weeks.  I was really glad to get home.

Have you spoken to Duke about housing after your transplant?  Please let us know.  Second Wind is putting together a program that lists temporary housing for various transplant centers, and we can see what is available at Duke for you.

Good luck to you and I hope your wait isn't too long.

Hi Sandy 45, I was just reading through and saw that you had a question on fund raising, my family and I have been doing that since May, we did a car wash and bake sale, a yard sale, and this Saturday we are doing a pig roast, I also made two quilts for raffles, there are so many things that you can do, another one of the girls that is going to have a lung transplant at Cleveland and that is doing rehab at the same hospital as myself, her family did a pasta dinner, so as you can see there are so many ways to raise the money. Good luck, Nana
