I recently started volunteering with my states Blood Center.  In RI we only have one organization that collects blood for the hospitals to use.  I have been able to attend blood drives to thank the donors and at the same time, talk about my transplant story and encourage organ donation.
 
It is a great informal setting as the blood donors come and go quickly.
 
You may find you needed blood during your surgery or maybe during complications.  I know I needed five units of blood while repairing some stomach ulcers I got during recovery in the hospital.
