Typical procedures performed Lung transplantation and heart-lung transplantation Unique aspects about the facility In 1988 Barnes-Jewish Hospital became one of the first hospitals in the United States with a program fully dedicated to lung transplantation. By July 1998, more than 430 lung transplant operations had been performed, making Barnes-Jewish Hospital one of the most active lung transplant centers in the world. The hospital has been a pioneer in new strategies such as single lung transplantation for emphysema and pulmonary hypertension, and in new techniques such as the bilateral sequential approach to double lung transplantation for emphysema and cystic fibrosis. And more ... Lung transplantation has become an important treatment for end-stage lung disease in appropriately selected patients. During the next decade, ongoing clinical and basic research promise even greater understanding of transplant medicine and surgery, refinements in patient care and further improvement in outcomes. The Barnes-Jewish Hospital Lung Transplant Program has been at the forefront of these developments and through its collaboration with Washington University School of Medicine will continue its contribution to improving lung transplantation.
