University of Pennsylvania Introduction Having performed nearly 300 lung transplantations as of December 2001, the Penn Lung Transplant Program is one of the most experienced in the country. Staffed by pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, advanced practice nurses, cardiologists, infectious disease specialists, nutritionists, physical and respiratory therapists, and social workers, the Penn Lung Transplant Program offers patients a multidisciplinary approach to the care of advanced lung diseases. As a recognized leader in pulmonary medicine and thoracic surgery, Penn is a Medicare-approved lung transplant center and a participant in the current Medicare/NIH sponsored trial of lung volume reduction surgery for treatment of advanced emphysema. The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania was recently named by U.S News and World Report as one of the top hospitals in the nation, and the Penn Pulmonary Division has been similarly recognized as one of the nationís best. Program Statistics Table 1. Annual Number of Lung Transplants Performed.
Table 2. Survival Statistics (1994-present). Our outcomes meet or exceed international averages. Survival is influenced by the patientís age and underlying lung disease. Survival is best for patients with COPD for which our one year survival currently approximates 80%.
