When I was asked to write about this book, I first asked, why me? I’m not a writer. I am just a grandmom to a child with a health issue – Cystic Fibrosis. I didn’t feel I could give it full justice for what it means to me. It is a very powerful book that not only provides all the ins and outs, nooks and crannies, why’s and why nots, what and what if’s to folks in this position. It dots all the I’s and crosses all the T’s. There are many thoughts, concerns, needs and challenges for these families – I know! I have heard them and even had some myself. People used to refer to Dr. Spock’s books as the 1st aid book for babies. Well, “Parenting Children with Health Issues” far exceeds that, and it simply does it all! I said before, after critiquing it in its development stage, it’s better than anything I’ve ever read for parenting and special children. We need this. Having worked as a teacher 20+ years and then working with many families in the Cystic Fibrosis Community and having five children and ten grandchildren, I would say I have been “exposed” to many families that this book will provide insight to and help them daily. I feel this book goes much further than just helping families. It will become a tool of choice for many professionals who work with these families to help guide them to a much happier and healthier life. I agree with Dr. King when he said “a few books fall into the Great Work category. This is one of them.” Thank you Dr. Cline and Lisa Greene and all the folks who helped Love and Logic give us “Parenting Children with Health Issues.”

Patient To Provider: A Patient's Guide To Transplantation
Author: Jeffrey W. Young, Jr. MSN FNP APN-BC
Publisher: Author House

In language, both instructive and clear, Jeff deftly simplifies the concepts of organ failure and transplantation. He speaks that greatest of all languages, the language of the heart, and the reader cannot help but be deeply motivated and inspired. The book’s dual perspectives of Jeff’s personal experiences, both as a patient and a health care provider provide the reader with a sound foundation for dealing with that moment in life when a patient is told he/she is no longer NORMAL. Here Jeff has masterfully found the balance between clarity and depth. The final section in which public statements from transplant recipients give a name and face to the many patients helped by live and deceased donor transplantation, is truly inspirational.

Sick Girl
Sick Girl Speaks! Lessons and Ponderings Along the Road to Acceptance
Author: Tiffany Christensen
Publisher:

"I was born with cystic fibrosis and have undergone two double lung transplant surgeries. Despite that, this is not a book about transplant or CF. In my travels, I’ve had the opportunity to interact with many patients with a wide variety of diagnoses. While we may have been on different medications, had different surgeries or experienced different symptoms, the emotional, spiritual and psychological effects were often nearly identical. I was inspired to write this book after a conversation with a friend who came to visit me one summer. Her father had just had a stroke and was in the hospital. She told stories filled with fear and sadness because she was so lost in the medical maze while desperately trying to take good care of her dad. I was overwhelmed with the desire to share with her all that I had learned through the years of stumbling through my own illness maze."

                                  -Excerpt from Sick Girl Speaks!

Reviewed By: Kathryn Flynn
Tiffany Christensen, like many adults with cystic fibrosis, has lived with the knowledge that her life span will be limited. Medical advances have extended her life far beyond the eight years predicted at her birth. Now in her thirties, with two double-lung transplants behind her, Tiffany has chosen to share a journey that has led her to clarity and acceptance. Tiffany’s book is a collection of essays separated into two themes: the medical maze and the emotional maze. As she navigates the health system she shares the lessons she has learned as a patient. The subtitle of this book, “Lessons and Ponderings Along the Road to Acceptance” describe the nature of this book- life is immediate experience but wisdom and insight occur as we reflect on our past and our beliefs. Rather than taking a linear trip through her life story, Tiffany meanders like a country road drawing on her life experience to share lessons learned. Being chronically ill and facing death twice (so far) does not guarantee that life lessons will be learned or imparted. A life examined, however, is valuable when shared with others. Tiffany shares her rebellions, her fears, her tears, her humor and her mounting strength as she becomes her own advocate and comes to an awareness of her spiritual belief. She shares her life without self-pity. One of my favorite sections, Tiffany’s Top Ten Opportunities of Illness has opened my eyes as I navigate my post-transplant years. I never took advantage of the opportunity to say goodbye to those I love and I am still working on what I think about God and resolving differences with loved ones. This is only one of the life lessons shared that makes the reader want to delve deeper and examine how much can be learned by examining your life with honesty and humor. In order to inform patients and professional caregivers, Tiffany has become a public speaker and illness coach. Her website www.sickgirlspeaks.com has information about her speaking schedule, podcasts, videos, workshops, private coaching for patients and families and this book also available in the Second Wind bookstore (http://www.2ndwind.org/store/index.html).

The Gift of Peace, Personal Reflections
Author: Joseph Cardinal Bernardin
Publisher: Loyola Press, 3441 North Ashland Avenue, Chicago, IL 60657 Tel: 800-621-1008.

In the final two months of his life, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin made it his mission to share his personal reflections and insights following a false accusation of sexual misconduct, diagnosis of cancer and the return of cancer after a 15 month remission. At the end of the story he tells of his peace as a gift from God and he shares that with all of us. The book is not particularly Catholic although mentions of the Church and staff are presented but only as that is the world in which he is living.

Reviewed By:
Damian Neuberger, Second Wind Board Member
I am not Catholic but found the book a wonderful read, short, easy, full of wisdom and did not find it in anyway theologically differing from my own faith. I have found to be a true gift. When I was being evaluated by Barnes, having completed 3 days of intense testing and on the fourth day, November 14th, 1996, my birthday, I was to find out if I would be listed. I awoke to the motel clock radio to the news that he had died from his pancreatic cancer. Somehow I suddenly knew that he had gone ahead to plead my case although I had never met him. Upon meeting the Medical Director, I was turned down but after showing out some old blood tests and a letter from Mayo clinic, I was accepted.
